I think there is a serious problem within our society. A problem so serious and widespread that it has infected every corner of our culture.
I believe that many of us have lost the ability to take responsibility for our own actions.
Think about it… How many times have you been reading the news online or watching television and someone is caught after committing a crime. More often than not, when the person is questioned, their response is, “It wasn’t me!” They blame everyone else for their actions or give you a laundry list of excuses as to why they did what they did, but at no time do they admit fault and take responsibility.
Unfortunately, it’s not just criminals who decry their innocence, even in the light of guilt. We do it all the time as well. “I didn’t get up early because Netflix just released 12 episodes of my favorite show and I had to watch them all.” “I was late because of traffic,” even though in reality you didn’t give yourself enough time to make the trip. The list goes on and on. We tell each other little “white lies” all the time.
Here is a very simple truth that can be tough to swallow. You are the end result of every choice you’ve ever made, both good and bad. Your actions (both positive and negative) have consequences.
- If you are unhappy with where you are in life, it’s the accumulated results from all of your decisions and reactions to situations you have been in.
- If you don’t have enough money, it’s not your boss’ fault, nor the government’s, not your parent’s… It’s your responsibility to earn a living.
- If you are unsatisfied with your relationships, remember that you are at least 50% of the reason your relationships succeed or fail.
- If you not happy with how much you weigh, it’s no one’s fault but yours as to how much and what type of food you are eating and how much or how little you exercise.
I am not saying that there are never outside forces that work against your success and happiness, but on the whole, we decide, or allow, circumstances to happen to us and then use that as an excuse for our lack of success.
But there is good news.
Right now is the best time to start making better choices and taking responsibility for your actions and decisions. If you are not happy with your career, it’s not up to your boss, it’s up to you to do the work to get where you want to be. If want to be healthier, do the work you need to do to lose (or gain) weight and get healthier. If you are not in a good relationship, step back and think through what is wrong and see if you are not at fault for how it’s going.
You can decide, right now, to create your best life starting today. You have the power to make better decisions and make better choices so you can be happier, healthier, and positioned for success. You have the power to be the best you ever.
Choose to be different. Decide to be better. Take responsibility for your actions and be awesome. Do the work today to make your tomorrow amazing!
